Camping at Wilson’s Prom Victoria

+ 4 family friendly walking trials in Wilsons Prom

One week of hiking, camping & swimming

With pristine blue beaches, an abundance of Australian wildlife and a huge selection of days walks varying from strolls to multi days hikes you can see why Wilson Prom is a must see.

We have camped as a family a number of times here. Its one of those places that just keeps drawing you back. Below you will find where we camped and what we did for the week that we stayed.

We set up camp at Shallow Inlet Caravan park over the Christmas break, which is an easy 40 minute drive to the prom. The reason camp here is because the prom its self has minimal camping options and they are incredible busy. We preferred to day trip into Wilson Prom to avoid the full camping grounds.

Shallow Inlet is a lovely alternative, particularly for families with children. The clear shallow water, as the name implies, is clean, clear, and shallow, making it an ideal spot for paddle boarding and fishing. The campground provides plenty of space and is well-maintained, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful night under the stars. Keep an eye out in the morning, as you might even be greeted by a friendly wombat or two during your stay.

They have toilets, showers, beach access, a small convenience store and boat hire.

Each day we either jumped on the paddle boards at Shallow Inlet beach when the tide came in or chose a walk in the Prom. There are so many to choose from!

Best Walks in Wilson’s Prom with kids

  1. Prom Wild Life Walk

This family-friendly walk offers almost guaranteed encounters with Australian wildlife, making it a must-do for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike. Say hello to roaming emus, kangaroos, and wombats as they graze and go about their daily activities in the paddocks. This flat loop trail is one of the Prom's easiest walks, making it perfect for kids and anyone seeking a quick, revitalising walk in the Aussie bush. We really enjoyed this one; the kids loved spotting the animals and taking photos. Don't forget your camera for wildlife snapshots!

Distance: 2.3 km loop

Start: Wildlife viewing area

2. Tidal River to Squeaky Beach, Wilsons Prom

We spent the day in the Prom tackling both this walk and visiting Whiskey Bay & Picnic Day in the same day.

A fairly easy walk of forest tea trees, picturesque coastal views and impressive rock formations. The Tidal River to Squeaky Beach trail, renowned as one of the Prom's most popular walks. Begin your journey by crossing the bridge at Tidal River, then follow the coastline as you wonder through scrubland. Before long, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of turquoise waters. Upon reaching the pristine white sands of Squeaky Beach, take a refreshing dip before retracing your steps back to the starting point. We have now completed this walk 3 times and love it, great for kids too.

Distance: 4.2 km

Start: Tidal River

3. The Big Drift

A family friendly walk that takes you to another planet. Starting at Stockyard campground, you will walk through paddocks, native bushland and scrub for roughly 2km until you reach the most incredible and vast sight. ( its a little steep this part, I crawled!) The sand dunes appear to go on forever as the granules dance in the wind and constantly change direction, it will transport you to another world, it really is a must see when visiting Wilson Prom.

Walk, run and roll down the dunes for a bit of fun, but don’t lose your bearings, its easy to lose track as there are not many markers, so be sure to cary plenty of water and travel with a friend. Each time we have visited there have been many people visiting too.

We stayed until just before sunset and were greeted with the most beautiful skies on the walk back.

Distance: 4.5km return ( not including time spent on the dunes)

Starting Point: Stockyard Campground Car Park

4. Mount Bishop Walk, Wilson’s Prom

If you have completed all of the moderate walks and your ready for something a little more challenging then give Mount Bishop ago. We did this one with our two kids are there was minimal winging! This walk takes your though native, rocky bushland that can get a little narrow at times, it has pockets of filtered views and an amazing flat rock surface just before you reach the top to take a breathe and admire the mountains below .Continue on to be rewarded with panoramic views of west coast of Wilsons Prom.

Distance: 7.4km

Starting Point: Lilly Pilly Car Park
