Bay of Fires Camping
The Bay Fires lines Tasmania’s East Coast with fine white sand, turquoise blue water ( yes it really is that blue) and brightly coloured orange rocks and boulders. It is the type of beach you expect to see on a tropical island. You can stroll, hike, ride, climb, camp and swim here. We were lucky enough to camp here in October and i’m still dreaming about returning.
This breathtaking destination is an absolute must-visit and stood out as a major highlight during our 10-day Tasmanian road trip. Our camping experience at Cozy Corner Campsite was nothing short of fantastic. Nestled in a well-protected area, the spacious campground provided ample shelter from the wind and hybrid toilets.
Each morning, a short walk from our campsite led us to the stunning beach, where we were greeted by the mesmerizing ocean views right from our tent.
In addition to Cozy Corner Campsite, other popular camping grounds in the area include Grants Lagoon, Sloop Reef, and Swimcart Beach.
We spent 2 nights and 3 days camping at the Bay of Fires, exploring all the other pristine beaches in the area. We were up at sunrise walking the beaches and also enjoyed star gazing at night. The lack of light pollution allowed us to witness a stunning display of stars, making it one of the best stargazing experiences we've ever had.
The Gardens was a huge highlight! Another stunning secluded beach with crystal clear water and white sand. We rock hopped over to the other side and felt like we had just found a secluded dessert island all ourselves.
What can you do at the Bay of Fires?
At the Bay of Fires, we enjoyed a range of activities including camping, walking, swimming, beach hopping, picnicking, and just soaking in the scenery. It's truly an incredible destination to wake up and explore. There are many areas within the Bay of Fires to discover, and each offers its own unique beauty with its orange lichen-covered rocks contrasting against the bright blue waters. The kids really enjoyed this part, they swam even though it wasn’t that warm, built sandcastles and climb rocks. They enjoyed exploring a new area as much as we did.
During our 2 day camp we explored St Helens, The Gardens, and Binalong Bay. Among these, The Gardens was particularly impressive.
Getting there:
We drove from Launceston, which took us 3 hours ( with stop off’s on the way) the closest town is St Helens which is only 10 minutes, and perfect for stocking up on supplies and its the closest town for a while.
