A rainforest retreat surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef

What is it like staying on a secluded tropical island off the coast of Cairns surrounded by the blue waters of the Great Barrier reef? Just as you’d expected. Dreamy!

We spent three nights living on at Green Island Eco Resort . Tourist destination by day, private island all to ourselves by night.

So why stay on Green Island?

Picking this little gem of an island means you're in for non-stop snorkelling! Forget about rushed boat trips with just a few hours underwater. Here, we had a full three days to dive in whenever we wanted. We explored the waters just off the sandy beaches and around the island in various spots, spotting an incredible variety of fish and even sea turtles! Even though it rained, the clairity of the water was ok.

Convenience is king on Green Island. There's a dive shop right on the island where you can grab everything you need for snorkelling adventures – from stinger suits to snorkel gear and life vests.

After action-packed days of snorkelling and lazy beach walks, evenings were all about kicking back with sunset drinks on the pier and watching the fish feeding sessions.

We also went out the the outer reef pontoon for a day trip which leaves from Green Island for an ocean snorkel. We cruised with Great Adventures Catamaran and did the Great Barrier Reef tour, It was honestly one of the greatest things I have ever done. I did not expect to see just how much coral and fish that I did, it really was a real life episode of finding Nemo. Even though it was cloudy and spitting with rain the visibility was incredible and I can not wait to do that again, it should be on everyones Queenland bucket list.

Each day started with a buffet breakfast, followed by a snorkle , a rainforest walk and a bit of beach lounging. By day Green Island is bustling with tourists, but by night just the guests and a handful of staff walk the island. Making it feel like its just yours. And with a cocktail in hand by the pool, you do feel pretty special.

Although it rained during our stay, it was warm and didn’t stop us from any water activities, It added to the rainforest experience.
